Thousands of FFA members from FFA chapters in 12 states competed in a challenge to connect with local farmers, and 11 Texas FFA chapters were named winners.

The FFA Chapter Challenge, now in its second year, is a program that strives to challenge FFA members to meet and build relationships with farmers in their local communities.  This will help foster a long-standing relationship between FFA chapters and production agriculturalists, while also teaching FFA members about a variety of agricultural careers. Local farmers are then encouraged to vote for the FFA chapter online or over the phone.

Voting for the challenge, which is sponsored by Monsanto as a special project of the National FFA Foundation, began in January and ended in late February. This year the contest expanded to include 12 states - Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.

The top FFA chapter in each of the 12 states received a $2,500 FFA Certificate of Credit, while chapters ranked second through tenth in each state received credits worth between $1,000 and $2,000. Eighty other at-large chapters received $1,000 credits in the campaign to bring FFA chapters closer to local farmers in their community.

The Industrial Chapter from Vanderbilt received 976 votes from local farmers to earn top honors statewide in the 2012 FFA Chapter Challenge. The Jackson County chapter will receive a $2,500 FFA Certificate of Credit good for FFA-related costs including chapter supplies, registration fees for national leadership conferences and other items.

Texas FFA chapters in Needville, Angleton, Canyon, Wolfforth, Wallis, Bellaire, El Maton, Houston and Bellville also scored in the top-10 of the state contest. The Dalhart FFA Chapter in Dalhart, Tex., was selected as an at-large winner.

An impressive 856 FFA chapters participated in the FFA Chapter Challenge. The Lawrence County FFA Chapter in Moulton, Ala., won the 2012 FFA Chapter Challenge grand prize that will send six FFA members and one advisor to October's 85th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. The grand prize is valued at $6,500. Complete results are available online at www.FFAChapterChallenge.com.
