The majority of Texans can say that they have heard the phrase “the stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.” However, Texas FFA has a different definition for the word “Star.”

These stars were recognized for their achievements on Wednesday afternoon.

Two FFA members who received the Star Award were brothers, Austin and Dakota Crissman of the Bells FFA chapter. The Crissman’s received this honor by creating a business from the ground up.

“It’s oil you spray on your show pigs,” Austin Crissman said. “We sell it to feed stores.”

The product the brothers refer to is called Champion’s Choice. Throughout the year, the Crissman’s not only ran their business, but they kept a record book of all transactions that occured. They took an average of 10-15 hours each week preparing their product and shipping it to companies in states such as Oklahoma, Iowa and California. During it all, the hardest obstacle they had to overcome was the rise in oil prices.

To receive a Star Award at the state level, an FFA member must keep a record book, complete an application process and undergo an interview. Austin Crissman was awarded the American Agribusiness award, and Dakota Crissman was given the Lone Star Agribusiness award after the process was over.

The boys were no strangers to the needs of show pigs, because they have been raising pigs since they were three years old. They used their own product for quite a few years before they decided to turn it into a business. The recipe to reduce “dry and flaky” pig skin came from a man in Ohio named Rick Fogle. Fogle made a deal with the boys since he was the original creator.

If it were not for high expectations, a little help from a friend and hard work, the boys would have not become the stars they are today, along with other FFA members who received the Star Award at the 2012 Texas FFA State Convention.
