On Saturday, Sept. 29th, in Waco, Texas, two East Central FFA members traveled to the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo to participate in the first Public Speaking Contest. Contestants throughout the state came to compete in the event with speech topics ranging from Beef Production to the U.S. Farm Bill. Kaitlyn Kempen spoke about the History of Branding and placed third in her division, Western Heritage. Kylie Patterson spoke about Agricultural Advocacy and placed first in her division, AgriScience.
Kylie advanced to the final round. After the last speech was given, Kylie Patterson was selected by a panel of judges as the champion speaker. Kylie earned a $500.00 scholarship and plaque. Kaitlyn Kempen is a sixth grader at Heritage Middle School and Kylie Patterson is a freshman at East Central High School.
