The Texas FFA welcomed Todd Staples, a former state vice president for the organization and current Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, to the 85th annual Texas FFA Convention. “The American dream is still very much alive today,” Staples said. He urged the members to take advantage of the opportunities to become better leaders and lead in a positive direction.

“You live in a state where good things can happen, and they will happen because of the leadership that you represent here today,” Staples added.

Staples grew up on a small cow-calf operation in east Texas. “We had to work hard every day,” Staples said. “When we got home from school, we could either go to the farm and work or we could stay inside and study.”

Staples eventually joined the FFA because of the appeal he saw in agriculture and education. A trip to the National FFA Convention with his advisor escalated his interest in the organization.

“It opened my eyes and made me want to continue serving in the FFA,” Staples said. He became very involved in the organization, and rose to the rank of state vice-president.

In his continued support of the FFA, Staples sees the FFA motto as not just a phrase, but a philosophy. He encouraged members to embrace this motto and treat it as a way of life.

As the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, Staples believes agricultural advocates should bridge the gap between agricultural production and the average consumer perception. He believes everyone should stay informed on the industry that maintains such an abundant food supply for consumers.

“I think you need to be an advocate for agriculture no matter what your profession might be,” Staples said.

Staples believes that, in order to acquire a limitless future, FFA members must continue to grow, adapt and take advantage of new educational opportunities. Despite this, however, he also believes members must never forget core values and never compromise their foundation of freedom and liberty.

“Never give up on the elements that are articulated in the FFA Creed,” Staples said. “Never give up on the concepts of liberty that are embedded in the FFA.”
