Ten FFA teams competed Monday, March 17, in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo State FFA Tractor Technician Contest. A&M Consolidated FFA took home first place, along with a tool box filled with new shop materials.

The A&M Consolidated FFA team consisted of Nick Raley, 18; Ben Mills, 18; and Dustin McGee, 18.
The Tractor Technician contest is a perfect opportunity for students to get on the job training. All of the skills acquired from this event are helpful in agricultural, industrial and personal applications. Participants receive hands-on training that empowers them with highly marketable skills that makes them highly employable.

Paul Richardel, a judge representing John Deere, told a Houston reporter he supports the contest not only for the scholarships, but also because the industry is in need of skilled technicians.

“In the field we are in, we have a need for technical students,” Richardel said. “This is a great way to support that, to make sure there is a group of students that might want to go out and become professional technicians at some point.”

Each three-member team in this contest must locate and correct five deliberately placed malfunctions in diesel-fueled tractors. Then each team is given two minutes to review a service work order, and given 25 minutes to complete the task. If successful, a designated driver then starts the tractor and drives it around a predetermined course. Each participant must also complete a 100-question written exam and an evaluation of 20 tractor and implement components.
