Howdy Texas FFA!

It has been quite a year for our state association. There are now over 104,000 FFA members who call this state home. That is almost 20% of the entire National FFA membership! I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but as Texans, we’re kind of a big deal. In fact, as FFA members, we represent one of the largest and most recognizable student-led organizations in the world.

Our blue jackets symbolize a tradition of excellence, letting host cities all across the state know when FFA comes to town. Just for a moment, think back to the first time you zipped up an FFA jacket. Maybe it was borrowed from a friend. Perhaps an old jacket that used to belong to a family member. Or, if you were lucky, it was your own FFA jacket fresh out of the box. Girls, I know we all remember going shopping for that first pair of perfect black heels. As for the boys, I hope your skills have improved since the first time you tied that FFA tie.

As we approach the end of the year, we will encounter multiple chances to rock these incredible jackets. And by “rock”, I mean complain about why we have to wear jackets when it’s almost 100 degrees outside. Take it from a girl who lived in official dress through every type of weather imaginable: don’t expect to be comfortable. While our jackets may not provide much in the way of comfort, they go above and beyond in providing memories. Each time we zip up an FFA jacket and jump in the ag truck on the way to a convention, there’s a sense of excitement in the air.

In these jackets, we run for officer positions, interview for scholarships and give some of our best banner-winning speeches. The stitching on these jackets tell the world who we are and who we represent. The pins we arrange on the front proclaim some of our proudest moments. We fill the pockets with chewing gum, good luck charms and business cards.

I promise you that there is more meaning to wearing our blue corduroy jackets than sweating in the summer and freezing in the winter. In your FFA jacket, you are one of over half a million students across the country who believe in the future of agriculture. Your jacket connects you to the countless people who came before you and the innumerable who will come after you. It’s our job to wear them well! Remember that sense of belonging and pride you had the first time you wore an FFA jacket? Let’s carry those feelings through to the end of the year!

Texas FFA, let’s make the next time we wear an FFA jacket one of the best. Choose to wear it with pride. Choose to make the most out of every second you spend in a jacket. Someday when you remove your corduroy for the last time, you’ll be glad you did.

Tried and true in the gold and blue,
