Texas FFA has broken another National FFA record. On Sept. 16, Area IV proudly hosted the largest greenhand camp to date, in Abilene, TX, with more than 1,200 students and 60 chapters in attendance.

Greenhand camp is an event designed for first year FFA members. The event offers students an opportunity to learn more about the FFA, discover their potential as a student leader and meet people from their area.

“It was extremely awesome to attend the largest greenhand camp in the nation,” Katie Holt, Area IV Texas FFA State Vice President said. “The Area IV officers did an outstanding job accommodating everyone and planning the entire event.”

Curtis Childers, former National FFA Officer and Texas FFA President, presented a heartfelt keynote address about the dangers of consumption of drugs and alcohol.  He recounted his own story of recovery after suffering a traumatic brain injury due to drug use.
Childers discussed the importance of life after one graduates and embarks on their own journey.

Attendees were also able to participate in a leadership development workshop titled “Everyone’s Doing It” presented by Texas FFA State Officers, Katie Holt and Zach McMeans. The workshop focused on proper social media etiquette as well as the numerous ways students can employ the power of social media for the greater good.

“The two groups were really interactive and it was phenomenal to see them get involved,” Holt said.
Campers left with the newly gained knowledge of what the FFA can do for them, as well as what they can do for their own chapters.

“In four years, these greenhands will be the ones leading our organization,” Holt said.  “I feel that this camp has planted a seed of hope and motivation in the lives of those in attendance, and now it is time to help them grow.”
