Texas FFA members and staff took their leadership, networking and interpersonal skills to Minute Maid Park for FFA Night with the Astros on Sept. 19. Before the first pitch, more than 100 members participated in an educational seminar that included a tour of the complex and interaction with Astros employees.

“The night was about getting out and networking, using interpersonal skills and representing the Texas FFA,” Dean Black, Texas FFA Leadership Development Coordinator said. “It was an opportunity to advocate for FFA while enjoying time with other chapters and state officers.”

Partnerships with organizations like the Astros help the Texas FFA advocate for the organization and agriculture.

“This gave us an opportunity to interact with people who are in an urban area; those who know about FFA, those who don’t” Black said.

State Vice President Ryan Prindle was one of seven Texas FFA state officers who attended. Prindle said he enjoyed meeting new people and seeing the Astros complex, but there was something else that made the event noteworthy.

“This event was unique, because the members were not in a competition setting like in the show ring or at a contest,” Prindle said. “We were simply coming together and strengthening that Texas FFA bond.”

Haileigh Sanders, Astros Account Executive of Group Sales, said that her goal is to cater each event to the customer. For the Texas FFA, that meant the right environment and networking opportunity.
“We wanted to provide an opportunity to network and have a good, wholesome environment,” Sanders said. “We invited people who work for the Astros, some who were in FFA, to talked about the values they learned growing up and how those help them now.”

There are several Texas FFA Nights a year. Past outings have included various professional sporting and rodeo events. On December 12, the San Antonio Spurs will host the 10th annual Texas FFA Night.

“Eventually, we would like to have an FFA Night in every regional area to allow all members the opportunity to attend,” Black said.
