Within the FFA three-circle model, the SAE component can get overlooked, oftentimes due to the lack of funds. The National FFA SAE Grant Program offers a simple way for students to get financial assistance.

Over 145 SAE grants are given each year to members exhibiting financial need for a project and the desire to strive for excellence with their SAE.

Kaleigh Burnett, Texas FFA Student Recognition and Scholarship Coordinator and a former agriculture teacher, believes that the program is a great opportunity for students.

“There are times when students come to you with a unique idea for a SAE program, but they have no way to fund it,” said Burnett. “This is a program that provides a solution to a common problem.”

National FFA accepts applications every year between September 1 and November 15. Applications are then reviewed by a committee. While most grants are awarded through an incentive based method of judging, the majority of the concern is toward a student’s financial need.

Nina Crutchfield, National FFA Local Program Success Specialist, believes that this program is an un-tapped resource for FFA members.

“This is a great incentive for students just starting out that are looking to bring innovative ideas to the ag world,” said Crutchfield. “Students that take a different approach to their application set apart from the rest.”

After completing applications last November, three students from Texas received a coveted SAE grant.  Lanier FFA’s Tram Le received a grant provided by Monsanto Company, Hardin-Jefferson FFA’s Jake Moore received the grant provided by the Organic Valley/ CROPP Cooperative and Robinson FFA’s Jordanna Woosley received a grant provided by Animal Systems.

While the deadline for 2014 has passed, students are encouraged to apply next September.
