The first general session of the Texas FFA Convention started off with a slam-dunk as former Harlem Globetrotter, Melvin Adams, gave his keynote address. His inspiring, outgoing personality and sense of humor motivated all 9,506 members present in the arena.

From the moment Adams took the stage he interacted with FFA members in a fun and unique way. With the help of a clever basketball demonstration the audience realized that impractical dreams could be accomplished with the right mindset.

Adams revealed that his love for basketball motivated him to overcome various limitations.
He was raised in a fatherless and poor household, never feeling like he was good enough. Through school mentors, guidance and a passion for bettering himself he rose above.

“Don’t be what people want you to be,” Adams said. “Ride in your lane.”

Adams humorously said, due to his short stature a career in basketball seemed unlikely. With practice and determination he overcame obstacles and is now an accomplished professional athlete and winner in the game of life.

Throughout his address Adams emphasized that a majority of success starts when you believe in yourself.

“Whatever your dreams, you are going to have obstacles in life,” said Adams. “I challenge you today to rise above.”
