Bynum FFA member Nickolai Galuppo was one of just 15 students in Texas recognized as a Student Hero by the Texas State Board of Education early this June.

The 2016 Student Heroes were recognized for assisting with local fundraising efforts, creating programs to protect human rights, mentoring, and for overcoming personal obstacles to give back to their communities or for just being a friend. State Board of Education District 14 Representative Sue Melton-Melone recognized Galuppo at a local district event with a certificate declaring him a Student Hero.

Galuppo recently recognized a need both within his community and his local high school agriculture program. Raising and showing livestock animals can be a very time consuming and expensive project. To alleviate stress for students experiencing financial difficulties related to raising and showing these animals, Galuppo created the “InForTen” project, where he pledged 10 percent of his winnings to the Bynum Ag Department to help students lacking the funds to compete.

The thought of donating occurred to him during dinner with his parents. Galuppo stated, “Like tithing, we give God 10 percent. Why not give the school 10 percent?”

Once the local livestock show and sale concluded Galuppo was able to present a $110 check to the Bynum school district, which represented 10 percent of the proceeds generated from the sale of his animal.

Next year, Galuppo hopes that more students in Hill County will join the cause and raise additional money to support local ag programs.
