The inaugural Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Quiz Bowl was held in conjunction with the 2017 Texas FFA Convention on Monday, July 10.  A total of 19 teams were quizzed on specific questions covering AFNR course material ranging from agricultural terminology to farm statistics.

The Oak Ridge FFA chapter won the final round, claiming the first title in Texas FFA history.

“This means so much to our chapter; as it’s our first state title,” said Alex Staples, Oak Ridge FFA team member. “It especially means a lot to our ag teacher who kept encouraging us to study and become better as a team.”

The competition consisted of several elimination-style rounds. Quiz bowls are a valuable teaching technique that present project information in a semi-competitive setting characterized by attitudes of friendliness, cooperation and fairness.

The competition has already seen increased participation from its first invitational held earlier this year at Texas A&M University.

“The goal is to get more teams involved,” said Ray Pieniazek, event coordinator. “We are looking to expand our categories and hopefully create a Senior Quiz Bowl contest so that all ages of kids can get involved.”
