More than 800 Texas FFA members took “learning to do” one step further this past February by attending the 9th Annual Agricultural Education and Texas FFA Days at the Capitol. On February 20 and 22, students had the opportunity to visit the state capitol in Austin to learn about the legislative process and how it relates to agriculture.

Students experienced the state government in action and heard directly from those responsible for making changes in the state legislature, including Texas Congressman Larry Gonzales and Texas Board of Education Member Tom Maynard.

“This experience taught me many new things about our government, especially related to agriculture,” said Luke Skrabanek, Caldwell FFA member. “I also enjoyed being able to tour the building and learn the history behind everything.”

Members also had the opportunity to learn about leadership, civic engagement and empowerment during interactive workshops.

“It was a great opportunity to learn and see about how our state government actually works,” said Peyton Wilson, Louise FFA member. “It was a fun and insightful day.”

Texas FFA Day at the Capitol has taken place annually since 2010. This experience provides agriculture students with insight on how the daily activities in the Austin capitol impact their everyday lives as citizens, students and Texas FFA members. Additionally, it allows students a platform to advocate for continued support of agricultural education.

“It is important for our members to advocate for agriculture education because they personify firsthand the skills that are acquired through our organization,” said Halley Reynolds, Caldwell FFA advisor.
